Temple Combe 5.15 Geometry |
Temple Combe 5.15 geometry sits very well in the local landscape . I continue to be surprised at how many sites the measure appears to be active within.
Worth noting the southern approach to the centre and the land features of Patson hill, Birch hill, Ambrose hill and Dancing hill all following the curves of the 5.15 circles….Holway hill sits where 4 circles meet….further in we then come to Poyntington Down and Seven Wells Down and Milbourn Down..all on the main N / S axis…..These may have been important hills in the past. Holway hill especially.
Anyone with local knowledge please e mail address at the bottom of the page.
The central area appears quite high on the OS map showing 180/170 spot heights in the area….the trail (dotted line) passing through is named ‘Monarch’s way’ on the local map ….continuing North we have Charlton Horethorne church, Windmill hill and Charlton hill all following the curves of the East 5.15 circles.
Along this circle’s curve the main road (orange line) coming in from the North follows the line…changing to flow with the other circle near Horethorne church, again following onto the next circle before heading towards the Abbey in the Sherbourne area.
From Sherbourne Abbey the trail follows the curve of the circle back in towards the centre , changing direction at Holway hill to follow the curve of the other circle for a distance before meeting up with the ‘Monarchs Way’ trail through to the centre.
The Black line to the East is the railway track ……comes in near Temple Combe….hits the point where two circle meets changes direction then exits at the same meeting of two circles to the South , near Vartenham hill, changing direction again as it does.
At South Barrow two churches sit opposing each other either side of the axis line but on the circumference of two different circles…further in, towards the centre, the axis line meets Cadbury castle and church with the same arrangement of opposition and both situated on different circles …Further along the line we meet Pen hill before reaching the geometry centre.
South Cadbury circle has on its circumference 6 features.
